Working With the New Moon:
A Simple Ritual for Intention Setting

The new moon is a threshold — a moment of pure potential before the light returns. You do not need elaborate tools or years of practice to work with this energy. All you need is a quiet space, a candle, and the willingness to be honest with yourself.

There is a particular quality to the darkness of a new moon night. It is not the heavy, oppressive dark of grief or fear — it is the dark of a seed beneath the soil, of a breath held just before the exhale, of a page not yet written. It is full of possibility precisely because it is empty of everything else.

For thousands of years, across cultures and continents, people have marked the new moon as a time for beginning. For planting — both literally and metaphorically. For setting intentions, making prayers, and calling in what they wished to grow in the cycle ahead. This is not superstition. It is a deeply intelligent way of aligning yourself with the natural rhythms that govern all living things — including you.

Why the New Moon?

The lunar cycle mirrors the cycles we experience within ourselves — the waxing and waning of energy, motivation, creativity, and rest. The new moon marks the very beginning of that cycle: a natural reset point, a moment when the slate is as clean as it is ever going to be.

Working with this energy does not mean the universe will simply hand you what you ask for. It means you are choosing to become conscious about what you are calling in — to move from passive drifting to intentional living. The ritual is less about magic and more about clarity. When you know what you want, you begin to move towards it. That is not mystical. That is just how humans work.

"You do not need to believe in the moon's power. You only need to believe in your own capacity to choose."

Before You Begin

This ritual is intentionally simple. I have seen people abandon moon work because they felt they were doing it wrong — that they needed more crystals, more candles, more knowledge. They did not. Neither do you. What matters is presence, not performance.

Find a time when you will not be interrupted — even fifteen minutes is enough. Turn off your phone. Make yourself a warm drink if that helps you settle. Sit somewhere comfortable, ideally somewhere you find peaceful. If you have a candle, light it. If you have a crystal you feel drawn to, hold it. If you have neither, that is perfectly fine.

The Ritual

Work through each of the following steps slowly. There is no rush. The moon is not going anywhere.

The Five Steps

01

Ground yourself

Take three slow, deep breaths. With each exhale, feel yourself becoming heavier — more present, more rooted. Let the day fall away. You are here now.

02

Reflect on the cycle just passed

The last lunar cycle is complete. Ask yourself: what happened? What did I learn? What am I ready to release? You do not need to write anything down — simply let the answers arise and acknowledge them.

03

Set your intention

Ask yourself: what do I wish to call in during this new cycle? Be specific, but not rigid. Frame it as a feeling or a quality as much as an outcome — "I call in clarity" or "I am open to unexpected opportunities" can be just as powerful as "I want a new job."

04

Write it down

There is something powerful about putting pen to paper. Write your intention in the present tense, as though it is already unfolding. Keep it to one or two sentences. Fold the paper and place it somewhere meaningful — beneath your candle, inside a book you love, or simply in a drawer.

05

Close with gratitude

Take a moment to feel grateful — for the cycle just passed, for the one beginning, for the simple fact of being here and choosing to live with intention. Blow out your candle (or let it burn safely). You are done.

What Happens Next

The new moon ritual is a beginning, not an ending. In the days that follow, pay attention. Notice what arises — the conversations, the opportunities, the synchronicities that seem to echo your intention back to you. This is not coincidence. This is what happens when you become conscious of what you are looking for.

At the full moon — roughly two weeks later — return to what you wrote. Reflect on what has shifted. Celebrate what has grown, even if it looks different from what you imagined. And at the next new moon, begin again.

This is the practice. Not a single ritual, but a rhythm. A way of moving through time with intention rather than simply being carried along by it.

Crystals to Support Your New Moon Work

If you would like to bring crystal energy into your ritual, these stones work beautifully with new moon intentions:

  • Black Tourmaline: Grounding and protection. Helps clear what no longer serves before setting new intentions.
  • Clear Quartz: Amplifies intention. A powerful companion for any manifestation work.
  • Moonstone: Deeply attuned to lunar cycles. Supports intuition and new beginnings.
  • Labradorite: The stone of transformation. Supports you in stepping into the unknown with trust.

If you would like support in deepening your connection to the lunar cycles — through tarot, earth healing, or crystal work — I would love to work with you.
