Card of the Month:
The Devil
He does not come to destroy you — he comes to show you the chains you have forgotten you are wearing. This month The Devil arrives as an invitation to look honestly at what binds you, and to ask whether those bonds are truly as unbreakable as they seem.
In the Rider-Waite deck, The Devil is Major Arcana XV — a horned, winged figure seated upon a half-cube, his right hand raised in a dark mockery of blessing. At his feet stand two figures, loosely chained at the neck. Look closely: the chains are wide. They could slip free. They are not prisoners of The Devil — they are prisoners of their own belief that they cannot leave.
This is the central teaching of this card. The Devil does not trap you. He simply holds up a mirror to the places where you have trapped yourself — and waits to see whether you will look.
What He Is Asking of You This Month
When The Devil appears in a monthly pull, he is rarely speaking of external forces. He is pointing to the internal ones — the patterns, the addictions, the stories, the relationships, the habits of thought that keep you circling the same ground. He asks: what are you pretending you have no choice about?
This month, notice where you feel stuck. Notice the language you use — "I have to", "I can't", "there's no other way". The Devil lives in that language. He thrives in the gap between what we tell ourselves is impossible and what is actually, quietly, within reach.
"The chains are loose. They always were. The question is whether you are ready to notice."
The Shadow Side of This Card
The Devil's shadow is not darkness — it is denial. In his most challenging expression, this card speaks of the things we refuse to look at: the excess we justify, the relationship we stay in past its truth, the self-sabotage we dress up as bad luck. He is not asking you to be ashamed. He is asking you to be honest.
There is also a more tender reading of this card. Sometimes The Devil points to the ways we have been conditioned — by society, by family, by old wounds — to believe we are less free than we are. In this light, he is not an accuser but a liberator, if we are willing to receive his message.
A Simple Practice for This Month
Set aside ten minutes this week with a journal and a candle. Write at the top of the page: "The chains I wear that I have the power to loosen." Then write freely — without editing, without justifying. Let what comes, come.
Three Questions to Sit With
- Question one: Where in my life am I telling myself I have no choice, when I actually do?
- Question two: What am I holding onto out of fear rather than love?
- Question three: If I knew I could not fail, what would I release first?
You do not need to act on your answers immediately. Simply seeing the chain clearly is the first act of freedom. The Devil asks only that you stop looking away.
Crystals to Work With This Month
If you are drawn to work with crystals alongside this energy, the following stones resonate with The Devil's invitation toward liberation and honest self-seeing:
- Black Tourmaline: Protective and grounding. Helps break cycles of negative thought and energetic entanglement.
- Obsidian: The stone of truth. Reveals what is hidden and supports deep shadow work.
- Smoky Quartz: Transmutes heavy energy and supports release of what no longer serves.
- Garnet: Reconnects you to your own power and vitality — a reminder of what you are capable of.
If this card has stirred something in you and you would like to explore it further in a personal reading, I would be honoured to sit with you.
